The Black Harrier is one of southern Africa’s most threatened birds of prey. With a small population and growing pressures across landscapes, conservation action is urgently needed. If we do nothing, this species could become extinct in our children’s lifetime.
Your support helps fund
Tracking Black Harriers
Buying GPS trackers (about R25k per tracker) to fit to adult and juvenile harriers to monitor their movements, habitat preferences, responses to wind turbines (particularly on sites testing blade-patterning as a mitigation) and causes of mortality.
Other monitoring and research
Including several aspects of Black Harrier ecology, from gauging nesting densities and breeding success in relation to different habitats and rainfall patterns.
Field workers and seasonal surveys
Appointing field worker(s) and volunteer group coordinators to reach areas that are difficult to access across South Africa to assess habitat characteristics and threats, based on movement of tracked birds.
Awareness and outreach
Sharing news of the threats to Black Harriers to bring about greater conservation awareness and action

Black Harrier conservation is coordinated by the Black Harrier Task Force, led by the Overberg Renosterveld Trust (ORT). Donations supporting Black Harrier conservation are managed through the Trust.
The ORT is a registered NPO and can issue 18A tax certificates for donations, upon request.
